Final meeting: Monday 14th April 1856
The village of Buckland Newton is a small village north of Weymouth in Dorset. The village is in the west of the county, on the edge of Dorset Downs, and today has a population of barely 600. The name Buckland derives from the Old-English word boc-land which means charter land. It is known that racing was organised in Buckland Vale in the mid-1850s, although the only recorded meeting took place on Monday 14th April 1856. It was organised by the 13th Light Dragoons and began with a Sweepstake which saw Mr Greatrex’s Baronet beat Captain E R King’s Don Quixote. However, Captain King sponsored a later steeplechase which was won by Mr Clement’s Algebra, while the feature Silver Bowl went to Brave Buck for Mr Hill.
